German Cockroach

The German cockroach lives indoors permanently and cannot survive a New York winter outside, so a population in your kitchen came in with something or arrived along a plumbing chase from a neighboring unit. It is small, tan, and carries two dark stripes behind the head. Bait works; spraying scatters it.

What does a German cockroach look like at each stage?

Three things get found in an infested kitchen, and people routinely think they are looking at three different insects.

The adult. Small — comfortably under an inch — and light tan to warm brown. The identifying feature sits on the pronotum, the shield covering the head and the front of the thorax: two dark lengthwise bars running parallel to one another. Once you have seen them you cannot unsee them, and they are visible without magnification on a live insect. Adults have full-length wings lying flat along the back, but this species does not fly in any useful sense. It runs, very fast, and it is happiest with its back and belly both touching something.

The nymph. Immature stages look startlingly different: much darker, close to black, wingless, and carrying a distinct pale stripe or pair of stripes running down the back. They are small enough at the earliest stages to be mistaken for specks of dirt. A resident who reports “big tan ones and tiny black ones” is describing one species with a breeding population, and that description is worth more than a photograph.

The egg case. A pale brown, ridged capsule shaped a little like a purse, carried protruding from the end of the female’s abdomen. This is the character that separates the species behaviorally from most of the others: the female retains the case until it is close to hatching rather than depositing it early. Empty cases accumulate in harborage sites and are excellent evidence, because they persist long after the insects that left them have moved.

What it is not, and how to tell:

The American cockroach is several times larger, reddish, and marked with a pale ring or figure around the edge of the pronotum rather than two bars across it. The oriental cockroach is dark, glossy, blunt and slow, with wings that do not cover the abdomen. Brown-banded cockroaches are similar in size but carry pale transverse bands across the wings and back rather than lengthwise stripes on the shield, and they occupy warm dry elevated places — the inside of electronics, behind hanging pictures, in high cabinetry — which is a completely different search. Wood cockroaches wander in from outside in warm weather, mostly in wooded parts of Suffolk and Nassau, and do not establish indoors.

Getting the species right is not academic. It decides whether you are dealing with a resident breeding population inside the building, a visitor from the sewer, or a damp problem in a cellar.

Why can this species not live outdoors in New York?

Because it has been an indoor animal for so long that the outside is not a habitat it can use here.

Everything about the insect is fitted to a heated building. It needs consistent warmth, it needs moisture, and it needs tight cracks with surfaces on both sides. A New York winter provides none of that outdoors, and even a mild season does not, because the population cannot maintain a breeding cycle in ambient conditions. You will not find them in a yard, in mulch, under a paving slab or in a woodpile in Nassau County, and if the insects turning up in a cellar are coming from outdoors, they are not this species.

That has three consequences that shape every job.

The infestation was introduced. Something carried them in. The realistic vehicles are cardboard boxes and packaging, grocery bags and deliveries, second-hand and reconditioned appliances, used furniture, laundry carts and bags, and belongings moved from an affected home. A refrigerator or a microwave brought in from a previous apartment is a classic and unglamorous origin.

Or it arrived through the structure. In an apartment building the population does not need a front door. It travels through the voids that connect units, which is covered below.

And it will not go away seasonally. There is no winter kill, no dormancy, no natural decline. A population left alone grows until the space is saturated, and then it expands into the neighboring space.

The building conditions that suit it are worth naming precisely, because they explain the pattern of activity better than anything about the occupants. Warmth: the back of a refrigerator, the cavity of a range, a dishwasher, a hot water line, a riser. Moisture: a leaking trap, a sweating cold pipe, a drain, condensation, a dish rack. And crevices — the insect is strongly thigmotactic, meaning it seeks contact on multiple sides, so it will choose a tight gap over a roomy void every time. Kitchens and bathrooms concentrate all three, which is why the insect is found where it is found.

What does the reproduction mean in practice?

It means the schedule of the work has to be built around the egg case, not around a service calendar.

The critical mechanic is the one described above: the female carries the case with her until shortly before hatching. Material applied to a surface reaches the adult; it does not reach eggs held inside a protective capsule attached to a moving insect that is sitting in a wall void. So a treatment can be genuinely effective against the population present on the day and still be followed, weeks later, by a new cohort emerging from cases that were in the building the whole time.

This is the single most common reason a resident concludes that treatment does not work. The count drops, everyone is pleased, and then it climbs again, and the natural inference is that the material failed. What actually happened is that the treatment did its job on one generation and there was no second visit timed to catch the next.

Nymphs then develop through a series of moults, each producing a cast skin, and they stay close to harborage throughout — this species does not disperse its young. The result is that a population is not spread evenly across a kitchen but concentrated in a handful of aggregation sites, held together partly by chemical cues in their own droppings. That aggregation behavior is why a monitor placed in the right crack catches dozens while one placed a meter away catches nothing, and why “we did not see many” is such an unreliable measure.

The practical rules that follow are simple and they are not negotiable. A single visit is rarely enough regardless of quality. Follow-up is scheduled to the biology rather than to convenience. And judging success means measuring, not asking.

What is genuinely at risk?

Health, tenancy and, in a commercial setting, the license to operate.

Allergens are the substantive health issue. Proteins from droppings, cast skins and fragments of dead insects become part of household dust and are a recognized trigger for asthma, with the strongest association among children in dense housing. Two things follow from that. Killing the population does not remove the allergen — the residue stays in cabinets, in floor joints and in harborage until it is physically cleaned out, which is why vacuuming and cleaning affected voids is part of finishing the job rather than an optional courtesy. And a building with recurring activity across multiple units is carrying a genuine health exposure, not just a nuisance complaint.

Mechanical contamination is real but different in kind. An insect traveling between a floor drain, a refuse room and a countertop carries what it walked through, and deposits it in its droppings. This is a contamination pathway rather than the sort of vector relationship a mosquito has, and it is why an inspector treats a sighting in a food premises as seriously as they do.

In New York City there is a regulatory dimension. Owners of multiple dwellings have obligations to keep premises free from pests and to address indoor allergen hazards, and a documented building-wide program is the practical route to satisfying them. For a restaurant or a food facility, this species is the one that closes kitchens. Program work in that setting is covered under restaurant pest control.

And for residents there is a cost that does not appear on any list. Living with an active infestation is genuinely distressing, and the stigma attached to it stops people reporting. In a building, unreported units are the mechanism by which a temporary problem becomes a permanent one, so any approach that blames the occupant is not just unfair, it is operationally self-defeating.

Where is the evidence, and what does its distribution tell you?

The insects are the least useful thing to look for. The residue is better, and its pattern tells you the scale.

Fecal spotting. Fine dark specks, like ground pepper, on horizontal surfaces adjacent to harborage — the top of a cabinet shelf, the underside of a counter overhang, the inside corner of a cupboard, the back of a drawer. In heavier situations it becomes dark smearing and staining along corners and edges rather than discrete specks. Concentrated spotting marks an aggregation site, and aggregation sites are where treatment goes.

Egg cases. Empty ones accumulate at harborage. Finding them in a location is proof that the site has been used for breeding, not merely visited.

Cast skins. Pale, papery, translucent shells left after each moult. Their presence confirms development is occurring in situ.

Odor. A heavy population produces a distinctive oily, musty smell. Detecting it in a hallway or a stairwell rather than in the apartment usually means the population next door is substantial.

Live insects in daylight. As above, a scale indicator. Harborage saturation pushes insects into the open.

Distribution is where the diagnosis lives. Activity confined to under a single sink is a different problem from activity in the sink cabinet, behind the range, in the bathroom vanity and inside the hall closet. And in a building, the pattern is the whole story: complaints running vertically up a line of stacked apartments point at the chase behind those kitchens and bathrooms, while complaints spread across one floor in different stacks point at something else — a shared laundry, a refuse route, a commercial tenant, or movement of belongings.

Monitors turn all of this from impression into data. Placed in identified harborage and checked at every visit, they confirm the species, locate the population as opposed to the sightings, and give a trend line that is the only honest basis for saying a unit is clear.

How do you judge how big the problem actually is?

By counting something repeatable, because impressions are worthless at both ends of the range.

Residents underestimate low-level infestations badly, for the simple reason that most of the population is inside cracks in the dark and only a fraction is ever visible. They overestimate the significance of a single sighting for the same reason in reverse. Neither instinct is any use for scoping a job or for judging whether one is working.

What we use instead is monitor catch. Sticky monitors placed in identified harborage — under the sink, behind the range, at the base of a cabinet run, beside a pipe penetration, in the bathroom vanity — are checked at every visit, and the number and stage composition of what they hold tells you three things at once.

How many. Not an absolute census, but a consistent index. A monitor holding a handful is a different situation from one holding scores, and the same monitor checked over four visits gives a trend that means something.

Which stages. A catch of adults only can indicate insects moving in from elsewhere rather than a breeding population in that room. A catch with nymphs of several sizes means development is happening in situ, and the harborage is close by. That distinction changes where treatment goes.

Where. Because this insect forages over a short distance, a monitor that catches heavily is next to harborage and a monitor that catches nothing usually is not. Moving them around over successive visits maps the population.

Alongside the monitors, the physical evidence gives a rough scale on the first visit. Light spotting confined to one cabinet is early. Spotting through several cabinets, egg cases accumulating, and cast skins in multiple locations is established. Smearing along edges, insects in the open during the day, and a detectable odor is a heavy population, and in an apartment building that is usually accompanied by activity in the neighboring units whether or not they have reported anything.

In a building, the unit of measurement is the line rather than the apartment. Monitors go into the units above, below and adjoining every confirmed one, because low-level activity in a neighboring unit is common, is almost never reported, and is exactly what refills the apartment that has just been treated.

What should a resident do before a visit — and what should they not do?

Preparation is part of the treatment, not an administrative courtesy, and one specific mistake is expensive.

Do: clear the cabinet under the kitchen sink and the lower cabinets nearest the plumbing, so those surfaces can be reached. Get dry goods into rigid sealed containers. Clean grease from behind and beneath the range and from the sides of the adjacent cabinets, because grease is a substantial competing food source and it directly reduces how attractive bait is. Deal with standing water — a sink left full overnight, a leaking trap, a pet bowl. Remove stored cardboard, which is food, harborage and the most common way this insect is carried into a home in the first place. Report honestly what you have seen and where, including in rooms you assume are irrelevant.

Do not: spray anything beforehand. This is the one that costs weeks. A repellent residue on the surfaces where bait needs to go can make those placements useless, and it may have already scattered the population into voids and along the chase into the next apartment. If something has already been used, say so — it changes the plan rather than being a source of embarrassment, and the plan is better for knowing.

Also do not empty and scrub every cabinet in the building the night before. It sounds helpful and it destroys the evidence that locates the harborage. Clean the grease; leave the spotting until it has been seen.

How is it treated, and why is bait the center of the work?

Because bait is carried into places nobody can reach, and because the alternatives push the population around rather than reducing it.

Bait placed into harborage. Small placements, many of them, sited in and immediately beside the cracks the evidence identifies — inside cabinet corners, at hinge and shelf-pin holes, in and behind appliance housings, at pipe penetrations, along the underside of counters, in the void behind a toe kick. This species forages over a short distance, so a placement it never encounters achieves nothing; density and accuracy matter far more than volume. Bait also reaches insects sitting inside voids that no application could enter, which is the decisive advantage.

Rotation. A population worked continuously with one material can become less responsive, whether through physiological resistance or a learned aversion to the bait matrix. Changing the material and the placements periodically is standard practice, and it is one reason a program run over months by one firm tends to outperform a series of unrelated single visits.

Insect growth regulators. These interfere with development so that nymphs do not reach breeding adulthood. They are slow by design. What they contribute is suppression of the population’s ability to rebuild after the visible knockdown, which addresses the egg-case problem described above.

Targeted crack-and-crevice and void work, into the specific gaps and chases the evidence points at, applied strictly in accordance with the product label and applicable regulation.

Vacuuming. Mechanical removal of insects, skins, cases and allergen residue in one operation, and immediate visible progress in a heavily affected space.

What is deliberately avoided. Broadcast spraying of surfaces in a German cockroach job. It contributes little, it contaminates the surfaces where bait needs to sit, and it is repellent enough to drive the population deeper into voids and along chases into adjoining rooms and apartments. Total-release foggers are the worst version: they reach almost none of the harborage while pushing insects into the structure, and they have a well-earned reputation for turning one affected apartment into three.

Physical work. Sealing pipe penetrations, escutcheons, cabinet gaps, damaged tile and chase openings does two jobs at once — it removes harborage and it cuts the routes between units. Fixing the leaks removes the water. That half of the job is described under structural exclusion.

Naming products and setting out dosing is not something that belongs on a website. Those decisions belong to the label and to the building.

What has to change about the building?

The plumbing, the penetrations and the shared spaces — because those are what carry the population between units and what sustain it regardless of any individual kitchen.

A plumbing chase is a vertical void running the height of a building, carrying supply, waste and vent lines, warmed by hot pipes, humidified by condensation and the occasional slow leak, dark, undisturbed and full of the tight junctions this insect prefers. It also connects the kitchen and bathroom of every apartment in a stack. Sealing that system floor by floor — the annulus around every pipe passing through a slab, the openings behind cabinetry, the escutcheons, the gaps at outlet and conduit boxes — is the durable half of the work, and it is a building decision rather than a resident one.

Alongside it: repair the leaks, restore drainage, deal with refuse handling and compactor areas, and pay attention to any commercial tenancy at ground level, because a restaurant kitchen and the residential stack above it are one connected space unless the penetrations between them have been closed.

Sanitation belongs here too, with an honest account of what it does. It lowers the carrying capacity of a space and it makes bait far more competitive — where grease and residue are available everywhere, bait is one option among many; where the surfaces are genuinely clean, it is the best thing on offer. What it cannot do is remove the warmth and water inside a chase, and it cannot stop reinvasion from next door. Telling a scrupulous resident to clean harder is both wrong and corrosive to the cooperation the program depends on.

Finally, judge the finish by monitors reading zero across successive service intervals rather than by an absence of sightings. A heavily reduced population is also a population nobody sees.

Common questions

What are the two dark lines behind the head?

They sit on the pronotum, the shield-shaped plate covering the head and the front of the body, and they run lengthwise like a pair of parallel racing stripes. Nothing else common in a New York kitchen carries that mark at that size, so it is the single fastest confirmation you can make with the naked eye.

Are the small dark ones babies or a different species?

Almost always nymphs of the same species. Young German cockroaches are much darker than the adults, nearly black, with a pale stripe running down the back — so a mixed group of dark small insects and tan larger ones is one population at different stages, not two problems.

What is the brown capsule the cockroach is dragging behind it?

The egg case. This species carries it attached to the body until it is close to hatching rather than gluing it somewhere and leaving, which shelters the eggs from almost anything applied to a surface. It is a large part of why a population that appears knocked down comes back weeks later.

Can they live in the walls without any food in the apartment?

They can persist on remarkably little — grease film, drain residue, the glue on cardboard, soap and skin debris — and a warm damp chase supplies water and shelter regardless of what happens in the kitchen. An immaculate apartment reduces how many the space will support without making it uninhabitable.

Why do I see them running when I turn the light on at night?

Because they forage in darkness and press themselves into cracks during the day. Sudden light sends them back toward harborage, which is actually useful — watching which direction they run tells you where the harborage is far better than watching where they were standing.

Is seeing one in daylight a bad sign?

Generally yes. Daytime activity in the open usually means the available cracks are overcrowded and insects are being pushed out into exposed space, which puts the population further along than most residents assume. It is a scale indicator rather than a random event.

Do they bite or spread disease?

Biting is not a realistic concern. The genuine health issue is allergens — proteins from cast skins, droppings and body fragments become part of household dust and are a recognized asthma trigger, particularly for children. They also carry organisms mechanically from drains and refuse onto surfaces.

Why is my clean apartment affected when my neighbor's is not?

Because distribution follows warmth, water and the plumbing that connects stacked kitchens and bathrooms, not housekeeping. Being next to or above an untreated unit is a far stronger predictor than anything you do with a mop, and the pattern of complaints in a building usually runs up and down a line rather than across a floor.
