Squirrels, raccoons and bats are exclusion problems with a humane-removal step in front of them.
What does wildlife management actually involve?
Two distinct pieces of work, done by two sets of hands. A licensed wildlife partner gets the animal out. Graduate closes the building so the next one cannot get in.
That division is worth stating at the top, because it is the opposite of how most people imagine the job. A homeowner who hears scratching above a bedroom ceiling is usually asking for something to be caught. Catching something is the visible part. It is not the part that resolves the situation. The animal got in through a specific opening in the roofline. That opening will still be there after the animal is gone, it will still be scented, and the surrounding acre contains other animals of the same species with the same requirements. If all that happens is a removal, the property is on a cycle rather than a schedule.
So the work has four phases and only one of them involves handling an animal.
First, establish what is in there. Species, how many, where they are traveling, whether there is a litter, and how long it has been going on. Second, get the occupants out by a method appropriate to the species and lawful for it — which for some species means a one-way device rather than a trap, and for others means nothing at all until the calendar permits it. This is the partner firm’s part. Third, close the entry point with material the species genuinely cannot defeat, and reinforce the adjacent weak points so the animal does not simply move six feet along the fascia and start again. Fourth, deal with what was left behind: fouled insulation, chewed wiring, damaged ductwork, and the scent that will otherwise advertise the vacancy.
Phases three and four are Graduate’s, they are where the money in this job actually is, and they are the same discipline described under structural exclusion — the difference being that a squirrel is stronger than a mouse and a raccoon is dramatically stronger than either, so the material specification climbs accordingly.
Who does the removal, and who does the sealing?
The removal goes to a licensed nuisance wildlife control operator. The sealing is ours, and it is the reason to call us.
New York draws the line here in statute rather than in trade custom. Environmental Conservation Law §11-0524 provides that “no person shall charge a fee to take, possess, transport or release wildlife whenever it becomes a nuisance” without a nuisance wildlife control operator license issued by the Department of Environmental Conservation. That is a specific credential with its own examination, and DEC layers further permits on top of it: endangered and threatened species require a separate license, migratory birds require a federal permit from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and a list that includes beaver, otter, mink, muskrat, fisher, marten, bobcat, wild turkey, black bear, white-tailed deer and all native snakes and turtles requires a depredation permit from the regional DEC office.
So we coordinate that half with nuisance wildlife partner firms who hold the license and do nothing else. They are on the roof for the removal; we are the ones scheduling it, standing the sequence up around it, and closing the building afterwards. It is a deliberate arrangement rather than a gap in what we offer, and the argument for it is straightforward: a firm that runs one-way devices on twenty rooflines a week is better at that specific task than a firm that does it occasionally, and a firm that has been sealing buildings since 1983 is better at the sealing.
Which is where the honest version of this trade gets uncomfortable for most of the market. Almost every wildlife job on Long Island and in the city ends at the removal and a one-way door. The animal leaves, the invoice goes out, and the hole is either left open or closed with whatever was in the van — a piece of hardware cloth stapled across a soffit return, a bead of sealant, a shot of expanding foam. That is the entire reason the same attic generates another call in eighteen months.
Graduate’s half of the job is specified the way the rest of this company’s work is specified. Custom-fabricated 26-gauge galvanised sheet metal at levered and chewed edges. Cement and mortar where the substrate is masonry. Xcluder fill fabric and door sweeps at the openings that have to stay serviceable. Copper and stainless mesh, and hardware cloth, at anything that has to keep ventilating. Mechanical fasteners throughout, because a barrier held on by adhesive is a barrier with a service life. Foam appears nowhere in that list in any role — not as a filler, not as backing, not as an air seal behind something better — because a squirrel removes cured foam in minutes and a raccoon removes it with one paw, and the resulting hole is now recorded as closed on somebody’s paperwork.
Rodent and wildlife exclusion is what this company is, and the wildlife version is the same trade at a heavier gauge. The removal is a visit. The exclusion is the outcome.
Which animals get into buildings here, and how do they differ?
Four account for nearly all of it across Nassau, Suffolk and the city, and each behaves differently enough that the approach is not interchangeable.
Gray squirrels are the most common attic animal on Long Island and the most persistent. They are diurnal, so the noise is heard in the early morning and late afternoon rather than at night — a useful diagnostic on its own. They are excellent climbers and jumpers, they use overhanging limbs and utility lines as bridges to the roof, and their incisors grow continuously, which means gnawing is not optional behavior for them. A squirrel will enlarge a small gap at a fascia board or a soffit return into a workable hole within days, and it will chew through wood, thin aluminum, vinyl and expanding foam without much difficulty. They cache food, they use the same route obsessively, and they will attempt to re-enter a sealed opening repeatedly and at speed.
Raccoons are the most destructive and the most technically demanding. They are nocturnal, heavy, extraordinarily dexterous, and strong enough to lever up a section of roof decking, pull back a soffit panel, tear open a gable louver or open a poorly secured chimney cap. Because of their weight, the noise is different — heavy, deliberate, thumping rather than skittering. Females seek dark, defensible, elevated cavities to raise young, which is precisely what an attic is. A raccoon in a chimney flue is a distinct and common variant of the same problem.
Bats are a category of their own. They are colonial, they need remarkably little space to enter, and the legal position around them is genuinely restrictive — the northern long-eared bat is federally endangered and therefore endangered under New York’s Endangered Species Law, and DEC’s own Long Island guidance notes that the highest remaining density of the species in the state is in Suffolk County. So the approach is never trapping and never lethal. Bat work is exclusion by one-way device, done outside the constrained period, followed by a thorough seal of a roof assembly that may have dozens of candidate gaps. Guano accumulation is the usual first sign, along with staining at an exit point and small numbers of animals emerging at dusk from a consistent spot.
Opossums are the least destructive of the four and the most frequently misidentified. They are nocturnal, poor climbers relative to squirrels and raccoons, and they mostly exploit openings at or near ground level: under decks and porches, in crawlspaces, through a failed foundation vent or a bulkhead that no longer closes. They rarely create their own entry, which means an opossum under a deck is a signal that something else opened the way or that the structure was already open. They are transient and slow, which makes removal relatively straightforward, but the underlying access is the same problem.
Beyond these, we see the occasional skunk under a stoop, chipmunks in foundation walls, and birds in dryer vents and bathroom exhausts — the last being a small job with a disproportionate fire risk attached to it, because a nest packed into a vent duct blocks the flow entirely.
Where do they actually get in at the roofline?
Almost always at a junction, a vent or a return — the places where two building elements meet and one of them was never properly closed. After enough of these jobs the list is short and predictable.
Soffit returns. The boxed-in triangle where a sloping roof edge meets the vertical wall at a gable end. On a great many houses this assembly is open into the attic from the day it is framed, because it is above eye level and nobody sees the gap. It is the single most productive squirrel entrance on Long Island housing stock, and it is frequently invisible from the ground.
The soffit-to-fascia joint. Where a soffit panel meets the fascia board, especially where vinyl soffit was installed over an older wood assembly. The panel is held by a channel rather than fastened along its length, and an animal that gets a claw behind the leading edge can pop a section out.
Gable louvers. Decorative or functional vents at the peak of a gable end, screened from behind with material that is often the original and often gone. A louver with failed screening is a doorway with a nice trim detail around it.
Ridge vents. Continuous vents running the length of the roof peak. The failure modes are torn mesh, a compressed or missing external baffle, and lifted end caps. Squirrels work at the ends; bats use the gap under the shingle course at the ridge.
Roof-to-wall junctions. Where a lower roof plane meets a taller wall — over a garage, a porch, an addition or a dormer. Flashing detail here is complicated, frequently done badly, and the resulting void connects straight into a framing cavity.
Valleys and roof-plane intersections. Where two roof planes meet, the shingle courses and the underlying decking rarely close perfectly at the edges, which gives bats a gap measured in fractions of an inch.
Chimney flues. An uncapped or badly capped flue is a vertical cavity that raccoons and chipmunks find attractive and that birds nest in. Chimney chases on frame construction have their own problem: the chase is a large hollow column and the top pan often rusts through.
Dormers, eaves returns and attic fans. Any of these can present an unsealed edge where the trim meets the roof plane.
On older frame houses across the North Shore, and on the pre-war housing in the city, add deteriorated cornice work, parapet gaps, and roof bulkheads whose doors no longer seat. On new construction the culprit is more often a detail that was never finished during the build than something that has failed over time.
The unifying observation is that these are the same envelope gaps used by everything else. A soffit return that admits squirrels also admits wasps and hornets and, at a smaller scale, mice. It is one building fault with several tenants.
What damage does an animal in an attic actually do?
More than the noise suggests, and the expensive part is usually not the animal.
Insulation. A squirrel tunnels through blown-in insulation and compresses it along its runs; a raccoon flattens broad areas of it by simply living there. Compressed insulation loses much of its thermal value because the value is in the trapped air, not the fiber. Fouled insulation is worse — urine and droppings saturate it, the material holds the odor, and the only sound remedy in a heavily used area is removal and replacement rather than cleaning.
Wiring. This is the risk that matters most and the one homeowners think about least. Squirrels gnaw compulsively, and romex sheathing is a soft, chewable substrate lying conveniently across the top of the ceiling joists. Stripped conductors in contact with insulation or framing are a fire condition. Any attic with sustained squirrel activity should have its wiring inspected, and that is an electrician’s call rather than ours — but flagging it is very much our job.
Ductwork and mechanicals. Flexible duct is easily torn and frequently used as a traveling route or a nesting site. A separated duct in an attic dumps conditioned air into the roof cavity, which shows up as a comfort complaint and a utility bill long before anyone connects it to the animal.
Vapor barriers and air sealing. Torn kraft facing and disturbed air sealing let moist interior air into a cold roof cavity, which condenses on the underside of the sheathing. That is a rot mechanism, and rot in a roof deck is a structural repair.
The structure itself. Enlarged entry holes, chewed fascia and rafter tails, damaged decking at the entry point, and in raccoon cases lifted or displaced roof material.
Ceilings. Raccoon latrine sites concentrate waste in one place, and a saturated ceiling assembly eventually stains through and then fails. Bat colonies build guano deposits that do the same over a longer period and add a real bioaerosol concern to the cleanup.
Scent. Less visible and more consequential than any of the above for the long-run outcome, because a cavity that smells of a previous occupant is actively attractive to the next one. Removing the animal without addressing the scent-marked material leaves an advertised vacancy.
How does a one-way device work?
It is a fitting installed over the animal’s own entry hole that permits an exit and prevents a return, and it works because animals leave attics voluntarily every day to feed.
The mechanics vary by species and by opening. For squirrels it is typically a one-way door — a sprung or hinged flap over the hole, or a short tube with a door at the far end — that swings outward under the animal’s weight and closes behind it. For raccoons it is a heavier, larger-diameter version of the same idea, built to a specification that accounts for how strong and how clever the animal is. For bats it is usually a lightweight tube or a sheet of fine netting hung over the exit and open only at the bottom, so bats can drop out and fly away but cannot find their way back up into the gap.
The device is only half the technique, and the two halves belong to different trades. The partner sets the device. Everything around it is ours, because every other opening on the structure has to be closed before the device goes on. If the roofline has five ways in and only one has a device on it, the animal simply uses one of the other four and the exercise achieves nothing. That is why the sequence runs sealing first, with the animal’s preferred entrance deliberately left as the last remaining route.
Then it runs for a period, and the entry is watched. Once nothing at the device has moved for long enough — no fresh activity, no sound above the ceiling, no new droppings or pale gnawing at the margin of the hole — the device comes off and we close the opening for good with material matched to what was using it.
The advantages over trapping are substantial. Nothing is confined. There is no relocation, which is both a welfare question and, for some species, a legal and epidemiological one. Young that are mobile leave with the parent under their own power. And the process reveals its own errors, because if animals are still inside you find out during the watching window rather than after the roofline is closed.
Why does maternity season change everything about the schedule?
Because for a substantial part of the year the animal in the attic has dependent young, and a one-way device does not distinguish between a parent and a nest.
Think through what happens. The device is installed. The mother leaves at dusk to feed and cannot get back in. Inside the cavity are young that cannot yet climb, walk out or fly. They do not follow her. They stay where they are, they are not fed, and they die in the wall or the ceiling. That outcome is inhumane on its own terms, and it is also a considerably worse practical problem than the one the homeowner called about: decomposition inside an inaccessible cavity, a persistent odor through the ceiling for weeks, a secondary insect problem feeding on the carcasses, and — with a raccoon — a mother who will work extremely hard, and destructively, to get back to her litter, frequently opening a second, larger hole in the process.
So the timing question is asked before anything is scheduled, and it is asked seriously.
Different species have young at different points in the year, and some produce more than one litter in a season. That means the constraint is not a single block on the calendar that applies to everything — it is species-specific, and it moves. Bats carry the sharpest version of it. The New York State Department of Health, writing guidance for children’s camps, instructs operators not to batproof buildings “during the period from late May to mid-August, to avoid trapping baby bats inside the building” — a plain statement of the window, from a state agency, in writing. And the northern long-eared bat, which occurs in New York with its highest remaining density in Suffolk County, is federally endangered, which under New York’s Endangered Species Law makes it endangered here too. The current state position for the species in question gets checked before anything is scheduled, rather than worked from memory. If the answer is that the work has to wait, we say so, and we explain what the interim looks like.
Waiting is not the same as doing nothing. During a constrained period there is real work available: confirming the species and the presence of young, mapping and sealing every secondary opening on the structure so that the entry point is reduced to one known location, protecting the interior from the animal’s traffic, arranging containment of damage, and preparing the repair scope so the exclusion proceeds immediately once the window opens. In some situations — particularly a raccoon in a living space or a chimney, where there is genuine risk to occupants — a different and more hands-on approach is warranted, and that is judged case by case rather than by rule.
What will not happen on one of these jobs is a device going onto a hole because a customer is impatient, when it is likely there is a nest behind it. It is the wrong outcome for the animal, it converts a manageable job into a demolition, and no partner worth coordinating with would set the device anyway.
Why does trapping alone fail?
Because a trap addresses the occupant and the problem is the vacancy.
There are four reasons this plays out the same way almost every time.
The hole remains. Whatever route the animal used is untouched by the trap. It is open the next day.
The property is still advertising. A cavity that has held a squirrel or a raccoon retains scent that carries information to other animals of the same species: shelter here, previously suitable. This is not a subtle effect. Attics that have been occupied and then cleared without sealing get reoccupied at a noticeably higher rate than attics that never were.
The population refills. Removing one gray squirrel from a wooded neighborhood does not reduce the local squirrel density in any meaningful way. The territory it occupied becomes available, and something moves into it. This is the same population dynamic that makes rodent trapping without sealing a subscription rather than a resolution, and it is discussed in the same terms under rodent control.
It can strand young. A trapping approach that removes a female during the dependent period leaves exactly the same problem as a badly timed one-way device, and it does it without anyone noticing until the odor starts.
Trapping has legitimate uses. There are situations — an animal inside living space, a raccoon that will not leave a chimney, a case where a one-way device is not workable because of the geometry of the entry — where hands-on removal by a licensed operator is the correct tool. But it is a tool used inside an exclusion job, not a substitute for one, and the operator using it holds a credential that is checked before the visit is booked.
What repair and reinforcement follows the removal?
The repair is specified against the animal that was using the opening, and it extends beyond the opening itself.
Close the entry point properly. Material that a squirrel cannot gnaw through and a raccoon cannot lever off: heavy-gauge galvanised hardware cloth, sheet metal, purpose-made vent guards, structural lumber where a member has been chewed away, and mechanical fasteners rather than adhesive. A squirrel goes through cured foam in minutes, which is the first of two reasons we do not put the product on a job in any position. The second is that a foamed opening photographs beautifully as finished work and is therefore never looked at again.
Reinforce the rest of the same detail. This is the step that distinguishes a repair from an exclusion. If a squirrel entered at one soffit return, the other soffit returns on that house are built the same way and are equally open. If a raccoon pulled one section of soffit panel, the adjacent runs will come away the same. Closing one hole on a building with six identical weak points buys about a fortnight.
Screen what has to stay open. Ridge vents, gable louvers, soffit vents, foundation vents and exhaust terminations all exist to move air, so they get appropriately sized metal screening from behind rather than being sealed. Blocking a functioning vent to keep an animal out creates a moisture problem in the roof assembly, which is trading one building fault for a slower and more expensive one.
Trim the approach. Overhanging limbs are the highway. Cutting branches back from the roof — a distance that keeps a squirrel from making the jump — removes the access route rather than the animal. Vines on a wall do the same job for a climbing animal, and ivy against a fascia is an escalator.
Clean up and restore. Remove fouled and compressed insulation where it is significant, clean and treat the affected cavity, address the scent-marked material, repair torn duct and vapor barrier, and re-insulate. Flag chewed wiring for an electrician.
Verify. Come back and check. Exclusion work is verified after weather and after the first period of pressure, because animals test a new seal hard and any weakness shows quickly.
What does the inspection look like, and what are the limits of this work?
The inspection is a roof-and-attic survey rather than a walk around the lawn. From outside: the full roofline at eye and ladder height, every soffit return, fascia run, valley, dormer, vent, louver, chimney and roof-to-wall junction, plus the approach routes — trees, wires, fences and vines. From inside the attic: droppings and their distribution and age, runs compressed through insulation, nesting material, gnawing and its freshness, staining at exit points, chewed wiring, torn duct, and daylight, which is the most useful single indicator in a dark roof cavity because a gap that admits light admits an animal.
Sound narrows it further. Time of day separates diurnal squirrels from nocturnal raccoons. Weight separates raccoons from everything else. The location of the noise, relative to a known entry, tells us which cavity is occupied.
As for the limits, several are worth stating plainly. Graduate does not handle, trap or relocate the animal — that is licensed work and it belongs to the partner firm, and relocation in particular is regulated, frequently poor for the animal, and generally solves nothing the sealing would not solve better. Exclusion does not proceed when the timing indicates dependent young are likely to be present, and that is not a position anyone gets argued out of. A roof that needs a roofer first cannot be sealed — a decking repair, a rotted fascia run or a failed flashing detail has to be made sound before anything can be fastened to it. And none of this is a one-visit event: the removal visit, the watching period, the sealing and the return check are separate appointments by design.
Where does wildlife work connect to the rest of what we do?
Wildlife management is the largest-scale version of the same envelope discipline that runs through everything on our pest control services page. The animal changes; the reasoning does not.
It shares the most with structural exclusion, which is the underlying trade and the reason Graduate is in this work at all — the difference is only the gauge of the material and the strength of the thing testing it. It overlaps directly with rodent control, because a roofline open to a squirrel is open to a mouse at a fraction of the effort, and mice frequently follow the same routes into the same soffit cavities. And it shares its geography almost exactly with wasp and hornet removal, since a colony of yellowjackets and a litter of squirrels choose their sites for the same reason: an unclosed void with a small, defensible entrance at the roofline.
