Mosquito Management

Mosquito pressure on a Long Island property is a standing-water problem, so the survey and the removal of breeding water is the service rather than the preamble to one. Ryan Katz works it under New York category 8, public health, using FIFRA 25(b) minimum-risk exempt materials, which are short-lived by design and cannot carry a program by themselves.

Mosquito pressure is a drainage and standing-water problem on the property, not a fogging schedule.

Why is mosquito pressure a drainage problem rather than a spraying problem?

Because every mosquito that bites you in your yard spent the first part of its life in water that was sitting somewhere, and most of the time that somewhere is on the property or immediately next to it.

A mosquito has four life stages. Egg, larva, pupa, adult. The first three are aquatic and completely immobile in the sense that matters — they are stuck in whatever puddle, gutter, saucer or container they hatched in. Only the adult flies. So the entire population that bothers you on a July evening was, seven to twelve days earlier, sitting in standing water within a fairly short distance of where you are standing.

That is an unusual and useful property for a pest. It means there is a bottleneck in the life cycle, and the bottleneck is a place you can physically go and look at.

Adult mosquito control works on the last stage — the one that flies, disperses, hides in dense foliage, and is continually replenished from water you have not touched. Larval control works on the stage that cannot go anywhere. A gutter holding water at a sag produces adults continuously all season; empty it and it produces none, permanently, with no reapplication and no residue. One of those interventions is a treadmill and the other is a fix.

This is the same reasoning that runs through the rest of our work. On a carpenter ant job the finding is usually that a member is wet; on a mosquito job the finding is usually that something on the property holds water for a week at a time. Different insect, same posture: look for the condition, not just the occupant.

It also means the survey matters more than the equipment. Anyone can run a mist blower around a property line. Working out that the actual production site is a corrugated drain extension buried under the mulch behind the garage takes an hour on foot with your eyes down.

How little water does it actually take?

Astonishingly little, and this is the single fact that changes how people look at their own yard.

For the container-breeding species responsible for most backyard biting, a bottle cap of water is enough to complete a development. A saucer under a potted plant is a functioning nursery. The corrugation of a flexible downspout extension holds a series of small reservoirs along its length. A folded tarp holds water in every wrinkle. A child’s toy left face-up in the grass, a forgotten dog bowl, the rim of a bucket, the pleat in a boat cover, the cap of an unused tire — every one of these is a legitimate site.

The other variable is time. Development from egg to flying adult takes roughly a week to twelve days in warm summer weather, faster when it is hot and slower when it is cool. So the rule of thumb is that any water standing for about a week is producing. Water that drains within a day or two is not. This is why grading and drainage matter: a low spot that ponds for three days after a storm and then dries out is not the problem, while a low spot that holds a puddle for a fortnight in August is.

Then there is the egg biology, which explains why the problem is so hard to starve out. Several important container-breeding species lay their eggs on the damp sides of a container just above the waterline rather than on the water itself. Those eggs can survive drying out — for months, and in some cases over winter — and hatch when they are re-wetted by the next rain. That has two consequences that surprise people. First, tipping a container out is good but scrubbing the inside is better, because the eggs are stuck to the wall. Second, a container that has been dry for six weeks is not necessarily clean; it may be loaded and simply waiting for rain.

Which brings up the pattern homeowners notice without explaining: a surge in biting roughly a week to ten days after a heavy rain. That is not the rain washing mosquitoes in. That is the rain re-wetting eggs across the whole neighborhood at once, and the cohort emerging together.

Where is the standing water people miss on their own property?

The obvious ones — the bird bath, the wheelbarrow, the kiddie pool — are usually already dealt with by anyone who cares enough to call us. The productive sites are the ones that do not look like water.

Gutters. The most consistently missed site on Long Island, by a distance. A gutter with debris at one end, or a sag between hangers, holds a shallow standing pond twenty feet long, out of sight, warm, sheltered and rich in organic matter. It is close to ideal habitat. Under mature oaks and maples on the North Shore, gutters fill fast and are often cleared once a year at most.

Corrugated drain extensions and buried drain pipe. Black flexible pipe is ribbed, and every rib holds water when the run is level or reverse-pitched — and most of them are, because they get laid by hand and settle. Buried corrugated pipe from a downspout to a pop-up emitter is the same story underground, and it is invisible.

Tarps and covers. Boat covers, grill covers, patio furniture covers, pool covers, tarps over a woodpile or over a project in the side yard. Anything with a wrinkle in it holds a puddle for weeks, and pool covers in particular can hold a genuinely large volume.

Plant saucers and planters. Under every pot on the deck. Self-watering planters have a reservoir by design. Hanging baskets with an integrated tray. Sealed decorative urns.

Tires. A tire lying flat holds water in the well and it never fully dries, protected from evaporation by the shape. Old tires in the side yard, on a rope swing, or used to hold something down are one of the classic sites.

Catch basins, dry wells and storm drains. Common on Long Island properties and in the streets around them. These hold water by design for a period after rain, and where they silt up or do not drain they become long-standing production sites. On a street with poorly draining basins, some of that production is municipal rather than yours.

Tree holes and stumps. A rot pocket in a mature tree, or the hollow of a cut stump, holds water for a long time and is protected from wind and sun. This is the natural habitat several container species evolved in before anyone invented buckets. It is also almost impossible to spot from a driveway.

The less obvious inventory. Flat roofs and porch roofs that pond. Clogged roof drains and scuppers. Window wells. Sump pits and the discharge point of a sump line that drains into a low spot. Air conditioning condensate at the pad. Uneven bulkhead stairs. Wheelbarrows and buckets standing upright. Recycling bins with drain holes in the wrong place. Toys, tools, tarpaulin grommets, kayaks and canoes stored right-side up. Rain barrels without a fitted screen. Ornamental ponds and fountains that are not circulating. Bromeliads and other cupped plants. Corrugated fiberglass panels stored flat. Cinder blocks. Fence post caps. Boats on trailers with no drain plug pulled.

On a waterfront or low-lying property there is a further category: salt marsh and brackish habitat that produces its own species in numbers, over a large area, entirely outside anyone’s control. That is worth knowing about because it changes what any program can realistically deliver at that address.

Which mosquitoes are actually biting you?

Not one insect but several, and the difference between them changes what will and will not work.

Broadly, the mosquitoes on a residential property here fall into two groups.

Container breeders are the ones the yard survey targets. They lay in artificial containers and small natural cavities, they develop in tiny volumes, and — critically — they do not disperse far. Several are day-biting, low-flying and persistent around ankles, which is why people report being bitten while gardening in the afternoon rather than only at dusk. Because they breed on the property and stay near it, removing their sites has a direct and observable effect. This is the group where source reduction genuinely earns its reputation.

Floodwater and marsh species breed in ground pools, ditches, flooded meadows and salt marsh, often in enormous numbers after a wet stretch or a high tide, and several of them fly considerable distances. If your biting pressure is coming from a marsh half a mile away, no amount of tipping over saucers in your own yard will change it materially. Recognizing which group is producing your problem is the difference between a program that works and a program that disappoints.

There is also a group associated with catch basins and organically rich standing water — including species relevant to West Nile virus, which is monitored in this region by county health departments through routine trapping. We do not do public-health surveillance and we do not make risk claims about disease on a given property; the reason to mention it is that these species commonly breed in exactly the kind of stagnant, nutrient-rich water found in a neglected catch basin or an unmaintained pool, and that is squarely within what a survey can find.

Practically, the mix on a given property tells us the ceiling. A wooded inland lot with heavy container breeding and no ditch nearby is a property where source reduction can make a large difference. A low waterfront lot backing onto marsh is a property where we will be honest that the achievable improvement is smaller and that a large share of the biting pressure originates on land we cannot touch.

Why does adulticide fogging alone stop working so quickly?

Because it treats the flying stage, and the flying stage is being replaced daily from water it never touched.

Break down what a barrier or fogging application does. It kills adult mosquitoes present in the treated area at the time of application, and it leaves a residue on the foliage where mosquitoes rest during the day, which continues to affect some that land on it. That is a real effect and it is the reason these applications produce a noticeable improvement for a few days to a couple of weeks. We are not going to pretend otherwise.

What it does not do:

It does not reach the larvae. Everything currently developing in your gutter, your drain extension and the neighbor’s tarp is unaffected and emerges on schedule.

It does not persist. Residues on foliage weather off under sun, rain and irrigation, and they are diluted by new plant growth, which on a summer hedge is fast.

It does not stop immigration. Adults fly in from adjoining properties, from the street’s catch basins, from the wooded strip at the back. The treated area is not a sealed volume.

It is indiscriminate about what else is in the foliage. Broad application to flowering plants and shrubs affects pollinators and the predatory insects that eat mosquito larvae. That is a genuine cost, not a talking point, and it is a reason to keep applications targeted at resting habitat rather than blanketed across a yard.

So the result is a sawtooth. Pressure drops after each application and climbs back as the residue fails and new adults emerge. Nothing about the property has changed, so the baseline is unchanged, and the property is on a schedule indefinitely. That is what a conventional barrier or fogging contract sells, and it is not what this firm does. There is no spray subscription here, no calendar of fogging visits, and no synthetic residue laid across a yard to buy a fortnight.

Which raises the obvious question, and it deserves a straight answer rather than a slogan.

What is applied here, under what certification, and what will it not do?

Two questions, and they are worth separating, because the trade usually answers neither.

The certification. Ryan Katz is a New York certified applicator, credential C1822141, carrying categories 7A, 7F and 8. The last of those is public health pest control — the Department of Environmental Conservation defines it as covering commercial applicators using or supervising the use of pesticides in public health programs for the management and control of pests. That is the category vector work belongs in, and it is what makes this lawful work for hire rather than a neighborly favor with a yard sprayer. The company holds New York pesticide business registration 03298. Both numbers are checkable against the state register, which is the point of printing them.

What is not held is 3A, which DEC defines as the maintenance and production of ornamental and shade trees, shrubs, flowers and turf. So the boundary is a certification fact rather than a preference or a hedge. Mosquito work, yes. Ornamental plantings, a turf program or a commercial grounds contract, no — those need 3A, and a client who wants both needs two firms. We say that on the first call rather than in the third week.

The material. Where anything is applied at all, it is a minimum-risk product exempt from federal registration under section 25(b) of FIFRA — the class built out of plant oils and food-grade ingredients listed at 40 CFR 152.25(f), such as cedarwood oil, rosemary, peppermint, thyme, lemongrass oil, geraniol and soybean oil. New York does not require state registration of these products. It does require that when they are applied commercially or for hire they are applied by a New York certified applicator, and that daily use records are kept for them exactly as for any other pesticide.

Now the part a firm selling this as a green upgrade will not tell you, and it is the part that shapes everything else on this page.

Exempt does not mean stronger. A 25(b) material is a short-lived contact product. It affects what it directly reaches and it stops mattering quickly — faster than a conventional synthetic residue, which is the entire commercial reason conventional residues exist. Nobody should buy this expecting a longer effect than the thing it replaces. The honest claim runs the other way: because the material does comparatively little for a comparatively short time, it cannot be the program, and the water has to be.

The label cannot claim disease control. A condition of the federal exemption is that an exempt product may not claim to control disease vectors or organisms posing a threat to human health. So nobody gets to sell a 25(b) application as protection against West Nile virus, and this page will not. Disease surveillance in this region is county and state work, and it stays there.

It cannot go in the water. This is the constraint that decides the shape of the whole service. New York does not permit aquatic use of minimum-risk pesticides, because of the state’s separate requirements for aquatic pesticide use. A practice working with exempt materials therefore has no lawful route to larvicide your ornamental pond, your dry well or the low corner that holds after every storm. That water has to be removed, drained, re-pitched, screened, circulated or engineered away, because treating it is simply not on the table.

That is not an inconvenience worked around quietly. It is the reason the survey is the service.

What is larval source reduction, and how is it done?

It is the removal, drainage and engineering-out of the water that produces mosquitoes, and it is the actual lever on the problem. It has three tiers, in order of preference.

Eliminate the water. Always first, because it is permanent and costs nothing to maintain beyond attention. Tip and store containers upside down. Clear and re-pitch gutters, and check them again after leaf fall. Replace corrugated downspout extensions with smooth rigid pipe run to daylight at a proper fall. Drain, fold and store tarps, or pitch them so they shed. Remove tires. Drill drainage holes in anything that must stay outside. Fill tree rot holes or open them so they drain. Regrade or install drainage where a low spot ponds for more than a few days. Pull the drain plug on the boat. Fit a tight screen to the rain barrel.

Introduce movement or a predator where water must stay. Moving water is largely unusable by mosquito larvae, so a pump or an aerator resolves an ornamental pond. A properly circulating and maintained swimming pool is not a mosquito site; an abandoned green one is one of the most productive in existence. Fish in a stocked pond deal with larvae efficiently.

Engineer out what is left, and write down what cannot be. Some water genuinely will not tip: a catch basin, a working drainage structure, a low area that holds after every storm. Because the state does not allow aquatic use of the exempt materials this practice works with, treating that water is not an option open to us, so the answer has to be physical. Re-pitch the run. Have the basin or dry well cleaned out until it drains as it was designed to. Cut a positive outlet. Screen the chamber. Put a pump on the feature so the surface never sits still. Where none of that is achievable, the site goes onto the written list as a known producer we cannot correct, named, with whose it is beside it — a street basin belongs to the county, not to you. A named uncorrected source is a more useful thing to own than a treatment interval nobody audits.

The maintenance side is where most of the value sits, and most of it is unpaid work you do yourself. Walk the property after every meaningful rain. Look down, and look behind things. Anything that has caught water gets tipped and, ideally, wiped out. That fifteen minutes a week is worth more than any single treatment we can sell you, and we would rather say so than not.

What does a property survey involve?

A systematic walk of the whole property with the water in mind, and it takes as long as it takes.

The perimeter and the roof drainage first, because that is where the highest-yield sites cluster. Every downspout followed to its termination. Gutters checked for level, blockage and standing water — from a ladder, since a gutter holding water looks identical from the ground to one that is not. Extensions and buried lines traced. Roof drains, scuppers and any apartment or low-slope area assessed.

Then the storage and the edges. Behind the shed and the garage. Under the deck. The side yard nobody walks through. Beside the compost. Under the porch. Behind the pool equipment. Along the fence line. These are where containers accumulate and where nobody looks between April and October.

Then the landscape. Low spots and where water sits after rain, which is best assessed a day or two after a storm. Catch basins and dry wells, checked for whether they are actually draining. Irrigation over-run and where it collects. Tree holes, stumps and hollow ornamentals. Dense low ground cover, ivy and shaded shrub beds, which is not breeding habitat but is daytime resting habitat, and which therefore explains why one shaded corner of a yard bites hard and the open part of it barely does.

Then the water features. Ponds, fountains, bird baths, rain barrels, pool and pool cover, hot tub, and the condition of each.

Then a look outward. What adjoins the property, at least as far as we can see from it. A neighboring pool that is green, a boat under a tarp next door, a drainage ditch, a wooded wetland, a salt marsh, a construction site with equipment holding water. We cannot work on land we have no access to, but knowing it is there tells us what the ceiling is at this address and lets us tell you honestly rather than blaming the weather in August.

The output is a written list of the sites found, sorted by what should be eliminated, what needs a physical fix, and what is a producer nobody on this job is able to correct. Some of that list is work for us; a good deal of it is work for a gutter contractor, a landscaper or the homeowner with a screwdriver, and we would rather hand over the list than pretend all of it is ours.

What can a mosquito program honestly achieve, and what can it not?

This section exists because the industry’s marketing on this subject is largely dishonest, and it costs the trade credibility every August.

What is achievable. A substantial reduction in the mosquitoes produced on your own property — and for container-breeding species that stay close to where they emerged, that is a large fraction of what has been biting you. A meaningful reduction in adults present in the areas people actually use, once the sheltered pockets they spend the day in have been opened up and the water feeding them has gone. A real improvement in the usability of a yard through the season, sustained rather than sawtoothed, because the sites are gone rather than suppressed. And a clear understanding of where the remaining pressure is coming from.

What is not achievable, by anyone. A mosquito-free property. Mosquitoes fly, and a residential lot is not a sealed enclosure. Elimination of pressure originating off the property, whether that is a neighbor’s neglected pool, the street’s catch basins, a drainage ditch, a wooded wetland or a salt marsh. Consistent results in the week following heavy rain, when a synchronised hatch occurs across the whole area at once. Any promise about disease risk, which is a public-health matter monitored by county agencies and not something a private contractor should be making claims about. And a fixed outcome regardless of weather, because a hot wet summer and a cool dry one are different problems.

What determines which end of that range a given property lands on. How many container sites exist and how many can actually be removed. Whether the lot backs onto marsh, wetland or a ditch. How dense the shaded vegetation is. What the adjoining properties are doing. And how much of the weekly walk-around the household is willing to do.

We would rather set that expectation in the first conversation than have it discovered in the second week of August. If your yard backs directly onto a marsh, we will tell you before you spend anything that the achievable improvement is real but partial. That is not a sales technique — it is the reason the client is still with us three years later.

When does the season run, and what should be done when?

The calendar drives the work, and doing things in the right order is most of the value.

Early spring, before anything is flying. This is the highest-leverage window of the year and almost nobody uses it. Clear the gutters. Replace or re-pitch the drain extensions. Remove or drain the containers, tarps and tires before they fill. Deal with the low spot while the ground is workable. Get the pool open and circulating. Every site removed now is a site that produces nothing all season, and the work is easier because there is nothing biting you while you do it.

Late spring. Activity builds as temperatures rise and the first generations complete. Overwintered eggs in containers hatch with the first warm rains. The first survey of the year makes sense here, when sites are still filling and before the population has compounded.

Summer. Peak. Development is fastest in the heat, and generations stack. Warm wet stretches produce a noticeable surge roughly a week to ten days later — that lag is the development time, and it is why the biting gets worse on a fine day several days after the storm rather than during it. This is when the maintenance visits and the weekly walk-around earn the most, and when a container missed in April has had eight generations to compound.

Late summer and early autumn. Populations remain high well past the point people expect, and the species composition shifts. Activity continues until sustained cold ends it, so a warm September holds pressure that a cool one does not.

Autumn, after leaf fall. The second high-leverage window, and the one that determines next spring. Clear the gutters again — this is the clearing that matters, because a gutter blocked by November leaves is a gutter full of water in April. Drain and store everything. Empty and invert containers. Pull the boat plug. Scrubbing the inside of the containers you are storing removes overwintering eggs from the walls, which is a small piece of work with a disproportionate effect on the following year.

Where drainage is the underlying fault, the fix belongs in the shoulder seasons rather than in July. And it is worth noticing that the same standing water and poor drainage that produces mosquitoes is frequently the same water keeping a sill plate or a band joist damp, which is how a mosquito survey turns into a conversation about structural exclusion and the framing.

How does this connect to the rest of the work?

Mosquito management is the outdoor, property-scale version of the same argument we make about buildings, and it sits alongside the rest of our pest control services.

It shares its root cause with ant control, because the gutter overshooting at a corner is both a mosquito nursery and the reason the trim below it is soft enough for a carpenter ant colony to excavate. It shares its logic with structural exclusion, where the durable fix is a physical change to the property rather than a residue with a half-life. And the same clutter and drainage conditions in a side yard — stacked containers, dense ground cover against the foundation, standing water at the sill — are what make a property attractive to rodents as well, so the two surveys tend to produce overlapping lists.

Common questions

How little water does it take to breed mosquitoes?

Far less than people expect. A bottle cap holds enough for the container-breeding species that cause most backyard biting, and a saucer under a potted plant is a fully functional nursery. The water only has to stand for about a week, which means most rain-filled objects qualify.

Do you fog the yard or run a barrier spray?

No. Fogging knocks down the adults present and leaves a residue that decays, while the larvae in your gutters emerge on schedule and adults fly in from next door the same evening. We do not sell that schedule. What is applied here, where anything is, is a FIFRA 25(b) minimum-risk exempt material under category 8, and it is short-lived on purpose.

Can any program eliminate mosquitoes from my property?

No, and anyone who says otherwise is selling something. Mosquitoes fly, properties adjoin other properties, and some breeding sites are on land nobody controls. A good program meaningfully reduces the population produced on your own property and reduces adults present. It does not produce a mosquito-free yard.

Where do people most often miss standing water?

Gutters that hold water at a sag, corrugated downspout extensions where the ribs trap it, tarps and furniture covers, plant saucers, unused tires, wheelbarrows, boat and grill covers, tree holes, corrugated drain pipe, and catch basins. Gutters and corrugated pipe are the two we find most often.

How far do mosquitoes actually fly?

It varies enormously by species. The container breeders responsible for most daytime biting in a suburban yard tend to stay close to where they emerged — often within a few hundred feet — which is exactly why removing sites on your own property has a measurable effect. Some floodwater species travel much further.

When does the mosquito season start and end on Long Island?

Activity generally builds from late spring as temperatures rise, peaks through the humid part of the summer and continues into autumn until sustained cold ends it. Warm wet stretches produce noticeable surges roughly a week to ten days later, because that is the development time from egg to adult.

What can I do myself between visits?

Walk the property after every rain and tip out anything holding water, keep gutters clear and draining, store containers upside down, change bird bath and pet bowl water at least weekly, and cut back dense low vegetation where adults rest during the day. This is the highest-value unpaid work available.

Does my neighbor's property affect mine?

Yes, and it is a real limit on what we can achieve. An unmaintained pool, a boat under a tarp or a clogged gutter next door will keep producing adults that fly into your yard. We survey what we can access and tell you honestly when the source appears to be off the property.
